10 AM - 1 PM PST

The idea of painting a portrait can seem daunting or even intimidating, but nothing is further from the truth! In this workshop, Jonathan Hardesty will demystify the process of a portrait. Jon will show, step by step, how he creates a successful and emotive portrait. Each section of the process will be clearly explained along with suggestions on how to put your own artistic stamp on things.

  1. The workshop will begin with Jon talking about how to clearly define a set of goals for a portrait.  In this first stage, Jon will work through different examples and talk through different artistic “takes” on the same portrait.

  2. Jon will show the “block in” stage of the portrait and highlight the importance of separating light from dark.

  3. Once the VIP students have completed their block-ins, Jon will help them problem solve and spot errors in the early stages.

  4. Next, Jon will demonstrate how to accurately create a value structure and color scheme for the portrait.  Jon and the VIP students will establish the lights and darks and experiment with color schemes.

  5. Having a plan for the skin tone is absolutely key!  Before moving on, Jon will demo several approaches to the skin tone by creating simple skin texture spheres beside the portrait.

  6. At this point it is time to start creating a simple & structural simplification of the portrait!  In order to prepare for the finishing stages, Jon will begin describing the general forms of the face by applying edge transitions.

  7. Once the VIP students have finished their general forms, Jon will give them critiques to make sure they can move into the rendering stage confidently.

  8. The rendering stage begins here.  Jon will focus on placing strokes and leaving them alone as much as possible!  The hard work in the previous stages will allow for him to place strokes confidently and expressively.

  9. The final stage is refinement! Jon will look over the entire portrait and look for any areas that can be improved or rendered more effectively.  This is where the “polish” gets added to the portrait and it really starts to look finished!

  10. To end things, Jon will go over the VIP students’ work and critique their portraits reviewing everything that has been covered in the workshop!

Born in Dallas, TX in 1980, Jonathan's first artistic endeavour began at the University of Pennsylvania where he started basic drawing and figure drawing courses. At the age of 22, his drive for more rigorous and traditional training led him to apply to the classical realist atelier, Pantura Studios, to study under masters Hans-Peter Szameit and Sanna Tomac. After studying for nearly three years, Jonathan and his wife moved to Dallas, Texas where he began building his body of work and honing his skill set. In addition, for over fifteen years, he has been teaching traditional atelier methods to a small group of committed and talented students. Jonathan has sold many paintings and his work is included in various collections throughout the United States. Jonathan has also been exhibited in invitational shows both nationally and in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Jonathan currently lives in Dallas with his wife and three children.
